Some folks spend their entire lives believing they know exactly where they are headed. Others are simply trying to make it through another day. Truth be told, I've been that second fellow more times than I care to admit.
There have been mornings when I woke up wondering what the day might bring. There were days when I wasn't even sure I wanted to know. Life has a way of doing that to a person. It doesn't ask permission before it throws another bend in the road or another hill that seems too steep to climb. Sometimes it feels as though you're walking a long, dusty trail with no sign pointing you in the right direction. You wonder if you're getting closer to where you're supposed to be, or farther away.
You wonder if anyone even notices you're still walking. There have been days when I quietly asked myself questions I never dared ask out loud. Lord... are You still with me?Do You really know what I'm carrying? Do You understand what it's like to wake up with a heart that feels heavier than yesterday? Can You hear my prayers when all I can offer You is silence? Maybe you've asked those same questions. Maybe you've wondered why some prayers seem to be answered overnight while others seem to drift into the wind. Maybe you've wondered why good people hurt, why kind people leave this world too soon, or why some burdens never seem to grow lighter. Those are difficult questions. Questions that don't always come with immediate answers.
The strange thing about faith is that it often asks us to keep walking before we understand where the road is leading. That dusty trail can be a lonely place. Some days it's filled with disappointment. Other days it's covered with regret. You remember words you wish you had never spoken. You remember people you wish you had hugged one more time. You remember opportunities that slipped away because fear convinced you to stand still. Dust has a funny way of covering everything. It settles on old memories, broken dreams, and tired hearts. Sometimes it even settles over our faith. But dust has never been stronger than grace.
When I think about Calvary, I don't first think about the cross. I think about the road that led there. A road walked by weary feet.A road marked with pain, rejection, loneliness, and unimaginable sacrifice. Jesus knew every step before He ever took it. He knew the weight He would carry. He knew who would betray Him. He knew who would deny Him. He knew the suffering that waited at the end of that trail. And yet... He kept walking. Not because it was easy. Because love refused to turn back. Maybe that's the lesson hidden along our own dusty trails. God never promised there would be no heartache. He never promised there would be no tears. He never promised there would be no nights when we questioned everything. But He did promise we would never have to walk alone.
Sometimes we don't recognize His presence because we're too busy staring at the dust beneath our boots instead of the footprints beside us. He's there in every quiet prayer. Every unexpected blessing. Every stranger who offers kindness. Every sunrise that reminds us another beginning is possible. Every hand that reaches down when we've fallen. Every reason to keep moving when giving up seems easier. The road to Calvary was never meant to end in despair. It ended with hope. It ended with forgiveness. It ended with an empty tomb and the greatest promise ever given.
That tells me something. Every dusty trail eventually leads somewhere. Some trails lead us farther away from ourselves. Others lead us closer to God. The choice isn't whether there will be dust beneath our feet. There will be. The choice is whether we'll keep walking when we can't yet see what lies beyond the next hill.
Looking back now, I realize many of the roads I once hated became the very roads that shaped the person I was meant to become. Those difficult days taught me compassion. The lonely days taught me gratitude. The broken days taught me to pray. The uncertain days taught me to trust. And the dusty trail taught me that Jesus had been walking beside me long before I ever realized He was there. Maybe that's where faith begins. Not when every question has been answered... But when we choose to take one more step anyway. Because every step taken in faith brings us a little closer to Calvary. A little closer to grace. A little closer to peace.
And one day, when this long journey is finally over and the dust has settled for the last time, we'll understand something we couldn't see while we were walking. The trail was never leading us toward more heartache. It was leading us home. The Dusty Trail to Calvary may be long. It may twist through valleys of sorrow and climb hills of uncertainty. There will be days when the dust clouds your vision and nights when your prayers seem to echo back unanswered. But don't lose heart. Keep walking. Because every dusty trail that is traveled with faith eventually leads to the same place... The foot of the Cross. And there, every burden becomes lighter, every tear finds comfort, every sin is forgiven, and every weary traveler discovers that Jesus had been waiting all along. Sometimes the longest road we will ever travel... Is the one that leads us to His amazing grace.
