Life has a funny way of fooling a man. When you're young, you believe that if you work hard, treat people right, tell the truth, and keep your word, everything will somehow work out. At least that's what I believed. Turns out, life doesn't always play by those rules. I have met people who lied, cheated, stepped on others, and somehow ended up with everything they ever wanted. Then there are folks like me. The ones who get up every morning, put one foot in front of the other, and keep trying.
Lord knows I've tried. I've chased dreams that always seemed to stay just one step ahead of me. Every time I thought I finally had my hands around one, it slipped right through my fingers. You know what hurts the most? It isn't losing. It isn't even failing. It's feeling like you've let other people down. There were people who believed in me. People who told me, "Don't quit. You're going to make it." I wanted to believe them. I really did. But after a while you begin to wonder if maybe you missed a turn somewhere back on the road. Maybe God had another plan. Maybe this was the plan. Those are dangerous thoughts when you're sitting alone.
I've spent more nights than I care to remember sitting on an old porch with a little whiskey in one hand and a whole lot of questions in the other. Funny thing about whiskey... It doesn't answer anything. It just lets you sit quietly with your thoughts for a little while. And sometimes that's enough. There were nights I talked to God more than I talked to anybody else. Not fancy prayers. Not church prayers. Just honest ones. "Lord... I don't know what else to do." "I've tried." "I've failed." "I've tried again." "What am I missing?" Sometimes I never got an answer. At least not one I could hear. But I always got through another day. Maybe that was the answer. I don't know.
Life has thrown more curves at me than a major league pitcher. Every time I thought I was finally standing on solid ground, the ground gave way. Still... The next morning I'd get up again. That's just what you do. You keep going. You don't because you're brave. You do it because the people you love are counting on you. Truth be told, I've wondered more than once if I was ever good enough. Good enough as a husband. Good enough as a father. Good enough as a friend. Good enough to make a difference. Those thoughts can eat a man alive if he lets them. Then one day something crossed my mind. Maybe I had been measuring my life all wrong. Maybe life isn't about how much money you make. Maybe it isn't about becoming famous. Maybe it isn't about proving everybody wrong. Maybe it's about trying. Maybe it's about loving people. Maybe it's about helping someone else get through a bad day while you're having one yourself. Maybe that's enough.
I've learned that pain has a strange way of making you kinder. Heartache teaches you to listen. Disappointment teaches you compassion. Failure teaches you humility. And whispered prayers... Well... Whispered prayers remind you that God is still listening even when you don't have enough strength left to raise your voice. These days I still have questions. I still wonder if one day things will finally fall into place. Maybe they will. Maybe they won't. But I know this much. I'll keep writing. I'll keep believing. 'll keep praying. And I'll keep trying to leave this old world a little better than I found it.
If all I ever become is an old man sitting on a porch with a cup of coffee, a little whiskey now and then, and a heart that still believes in people... Then maybe... Just maybe... I did better than I thought. Because success isn't always found in what you build. Sometimes it's found in what you refuse to become. And if my story ends with a little whiskey... A whole lot of pain... And whispered prayers... I hope Heaven knows I never stopped trying. Not once.
