Every morning he did the same thing. Before the noise. Before the phone. Before the worries. Before the world had a chance to tell him who he was supposed to be. He poured himself a cup of coffee.
The old mug was chipped around the rim. It had seen better days, much like the man holding it. He would step out onto the porch while the sun slowly climbed over the trees, filling the sky with soft shades of gold and orange. There was something peaceful about those few quiet minutes. No speeches. No crowds. No expectations. Just a man, a cup of coffee, and a conversation with God.
As the steam drifted into the cool morning air, his thoughts often wandered to Jesus. He wondered what that final morning had been like. Did Jesus pause for just a moment before beginning the walk to Calvary? Did He take one last look at the sunrise He had created? Did He hear the birds singing, knowing they had no idea what the day would bring? Did He smile anyway? The man imagined that if there had been a simple wooden table nearby, maybe there would have been a cup of coffee sitting there. Not because Jesus needed it. But because coffee has a way of slowing us down long enough to remember what really matters.
He took another sip. Life hadn't turned out the way he had planned. There had been broken dreams, lost friends, sickness, disappointment, and more tears than he ever thought one heart could carry. Some mornings the weight felt almost impossible. Yet every sunrise reminded him that God had not forgotten him. If Jesus could carry a cross for the sins of the world... Perhaps he could carry today's burdens for just one more day. The coffee wasn't the answer. The porch wasn't the answer. Even the sunrise wasn't the answer. They were simply reminders to stop long enough to remember where the real answer had always been. At the Cross. The Cross where mercy met justice. Where forgiveness defeated guilt. Where hope refused to die. He looked down into his cup and smiled. The coffee would soon be gone. The morning would fade. The chores would begin. The aches in his body would still be there. The struggles would still wait for him. But something inside him had changed. Not because life had become easier. Because he remembered that before there was an empty tomb... There was a Cross. And before every difficult day... There could always be a quiet moment with God.
He stood, stretched his tired back, and looked toward the heavens. "Thank You," he whispered. "For another sunrise. For another cup of coffee. For another chance to try again. And most of all... Thank You for the Cross." He picked up his empty mug and walked back inside. The day hadn't become lighter. But somehow... His heart had.
Sometimes the greatest miracles don't happen in front of thousands of people. Sometimes they happen on an old porch... With a worn-out coffee cup... Just before a weary soul remembers what Jesus did on a lonely hill called Calvary. And maybe that's why every morning begins the same way. Coffee... Before the Cross.
