Most folks spend their lives trying to find the fastest road. The smooth road. The easy road. The one with the fewest bumps, the clearest signs, and the quickest way to wherever they think they're supposed to be. I used to be one of those people. Then life handed me a dirt road. Not the kind you find on a map. The kind that leaves dust on your boots, weariness in your bones, and more questions than answers.
It was a road filled with sickness I never expected, friends I had to bury, dreams that quietly slipped away, and mornings when getting out of bed felt like climbing a mountain. There were days I wondered if God had forgotten where I was. I prayed. I waited. Sometimes I even got a little angry. I would look around and see other people racing down life's paved highways while I seemed to be stuck, inching along through the ruts and rocks. It didn't seem fair. Then one morning, with a cup of coffee in my hand, I noticed something. The most beautiful wildflowers weren't growing beside the highway. They were growing along the old dirt road. The birds seemed louder there. The breeze felt softer. The silence somehow spoke a little clearer. Maybe it wasn't the road that had changed. Maybe it was me. I began to understand that God doesn't always meet us where life is comfortabl. eSometimes He waits where life slows down enough for us to finally listen. Out on the dirt roads, there are no crowds cheering you on. There are no bright lights. No trophies. No applause. Just you... ...and God.
Those lonely miles became my classroom. They taught me that strength isn't found in never falling. It's found in getting up one more time. They taught me that kindness matters because you never know who's walking an even rougher road than yours. They taught me that faith isn't believing everything will be easy. Faith is believing God is still walking beside you when nothing feels easy at all. Looking back now, I realize something I never understood when I first started that journey. If my road had always been smooth... I probably would have driven right past the blessings. I might never have noticed the people who needed a smile. I might never have taken the time to write the stories that found their way into my heart. I might never have discovered just how close God had been all along. Sometimes He doesn't remove the dirt road. Sometimes He simply walks it with you. Every bump. Every curve. Every lonely mile. Until one day you stop asking, "Why me?" And instead you quietly whisper... "Thank You for not leaving me."
The dust eventually settles. The road eventually ends. But the lessons stay with you forever. So if today your life feels like one long dirt road... Keep walking. The dust on your boots isn't proof that you've lost your way. It may be proof that you're walking the very road where God has been waiting for you all along. Because sometimes... God doesn't wait at the end of the journey. Sometimes... God waits on dirt roads.
